Artist Details:Winifred Matthews was born in New Malden on the outskirts of London and after studying at Westminster School of art, studied at the Slade under Prof. Fredrick Brown. He wrote an article on her which was published in the 'Quarto' magazine in 1896 shortly after her death. She did have works published in various magazines and Edward Garnett wrote a book on her in 1902 entitled 'The Art of Winifred Matthews an Essay. published by Duckworth. Many of her compositions were figurative and invariably depicted children of the period. A little private exhibition of her drawings was held at the Slade School shortly after her death.
