Artist Details:William Morris was educated at Marlborough and went on to Exeter College Oxford, where he met his life long friend, Edward Burne-Jones who introduced him to Charles Faulkner who became co-founder of Morris's first firm. Morris was articled to G.E.Street the architect in 1856 and in the same year, moved to London to study painting under Dante Gabriel Rossetti. In 1861 the firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. was founded and by 1864 Morris had designed 3 wallpapers. By the end of his life, Morris had designed over 50 wallpapers and some 37 chintzes. In 1875 the firm was dissolved and began again as Morris & Co. The wallpapers were hand-blocked and printed by the firm of Jeffrey & Co.until their closure in 1930 and the firm Morris & Co. went into voluntary liquidation in 1940.
